Institute of Contemporary Art

Adélie de Gerlache

(Belgium)

I love Boston so much that it was not easy to find something to present to you, the following CELOP students. I’ve chosen to present the Institute of Contemporary Art. In contrast to the Museum of Fine Arts, in the ICA, I didn’t have to ask the guardians “Where is the contemporary part?” without being understood. For my defense, the word ‘contemporary’ is not easy to pronounce. The contemporary art is my favorite kind because it lets my imagination take me everywhere.

Even if you’re not a big fan of Contemporary Art you will enjoy the building of the Institute of Contemporary Art, which is amazing. The shape of the building gives the public the opportunity to have a great view of the Boston Harbor when they are in.

Since 2006, The ICA building has been in the seaport district of South Boston. I found on the Internet that before that time, the building was in the Back Bay neighborhood.

According to the Institute itself, the ICA has one mission: “sharing the pleasures of reflection, inspiration, provocation, and imagination that contemporary art offers through public access to art, artists, and the creative process.”

The ICA organizes different events. It is possible to see different kinds of shows. Unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity to see one of them, so I can’t speak about it. My apologies.

Shepard Fairey Exhibition (2009)

The exhibition I saw, “In the making”, is about the process of establishing a piece of art. You won’t see this one. The next one is about a Mexican tattoo artist. The entrance is around $10, but for our wallet’s pleasure, it is free on Thursday after four o’clock.

Damien Ortega Cosmic Things Exhibition (2009)

For my point of view, the ICA is not easy to reach. To reach the museum, you have to take the red line to South station and then transfer to the bus of the silver line and get off either at World Trade Station or Courthouse Station.

What are you doing next Thursday? Enjoy it!
